At least thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
