Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the right to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
